Major
exhibitions dedicated to genius were a hit with the public
in the last decade, with the number of visitors close to the
million-border. Only a few museums in Europe can afford this
super-shows – we tell you which ones.
Even smaller art establishments, however, and particularly
in Italy, have tried to improve and strenghthen their status
with large exhibitions. The trend was begun by the exhibitions
in the “Casa dei Carraresi” in Treviso, which
packed in over two millions visitors from 1998 to 2005. In
2002 the "Galeria Celeste", welcomed over five hundred
thousand visitors in the old duchy of Mantova, and the exhibition
in honour of the "Este" family, former rulers of
Ferrara, also clocked up over a hundred thousand. Even in
“Bassano del Grappa”, a city away from the main
tourism route, over 150,000 visitors flocked to see the exhibition
of Antonio Canova. Some cities, e.g. Senigallia, Urbino and
Pesaro, with an exhibition dedicated to the Della Rovere,
unite themselves into a consortium, so as to finance the high
costs of this activity. Other larger towns, such as Bergamo
and Brescia, decided enormous special budgets (12 millions
euro for the period 2004 - 2008 in Brescia!) in order to attract
those tourists interested in art into their city. Take advantage
of it!
