It
cannot be denied that "meals" and "fairs" have a sacred
origin, even if nowadays eating with friends has a rather more earthy
character and fairs fulfil a more commercial than religious role.
Even the word ‘Sagra’ ( a derivation of the Latin for ‘holy’)
refers to this original devotional function. Nowadays there are thousands
of these events, and not only in Italy, which are based around a single
food product, be it truffle or eel, olive oil or ham.
We have selected here some of the larger and more interesting examples.
As such you will find listed the trendy ‘Slow Food’ offers
in Turin, and the sinful ‘CioccolaTO’ festival during which
everything revolves around the sweet seduction of chocolate. Austria too
is represented by the apricot feast, with its famous Wachau’s apricot
dumpling, and the Netherlands tempts us – how could it be otherwise?
- with the Alkmaar’s cheese market.
If you want to experience the highlights of regional and national specialities, you should visit one of the traditional agricultural industrial fairs. Glistening, decked out breeding animals and other cattle on display remind us of who we should be really thankful to for these gastronomic delights- a combination of culinary and domesticated animals zoo.
At any rate, you should leave the bathroom scales at home for this trip, to prevent grey clouds of guilt from disturbing the pleasure of your indulgence!
