The
Kirmes developed over the course of the centuries ("All
Saints", in the city of Joest exists since 1417 AD) and
became a stage for travelling actors, magicians, fortune-tellers
and such types.
Beginning in the Middle Ages, more and more celebrations became associated to professional guilds. The celebrations in honour of patron Saints, particularly popular in Northern Germany, stem from this period, but also for instance the Munich ‘Schaeffler dance’ of the coopers, or the ‘Fishers’ pricking’ in Ulm, Frankfurt and Worms, etc.
In the 19th century the agricultural industrial fairs developed, from which the two largest German popular celebrations were spawned - the "Wiesn" in Munich, also known as the “Octoberfest”, and the "Cannstatter Wasen" (“The lawn of Cannstatt”) in Stuttgart. More information, photos and a history of these celebrations can be found on this web site.
