» A Europe to live in, a Europe to experience
Every year, millions of people make the pilgrimage to the Sistine Chapel, the Piétà, David and other masterpieces by Michelangelo in Rome and Florence. However in doing so the master’s admirers usually miss out on one of the wonders of the world nearby – the Carrara marble quarries, where Buonarotti selected and carved out his blocks himself.
2006 is an ideal year to catch up on this missed experience, because a block is being carved again right in the Cave Michelangelo for the first time in 500 years. This block is the largest ever quarried, the raw material for the “Coat of Peace” by sculptress Anna Chromy. It will be fascinating to watch how months of work will result in the creation of the 4.5 metre-high chapel of peace from the 200-tonne block, which will then be dedicated on 4th October 2007 on the feast day of St. Francis in Assisi. A unique experience for every art enthusiast.
"As a European I welcome the publication of this Top 500 Events guide. It's really much more. It's an encyclopaedia of regional traditions and customs in Europe , and a valuable journey planner for every European citizen. It will be my vademecum on trips throughout Europe in future.
I hope that you too will derive plenty of enjoyment from the guide, and that it will help to bring Europe still a little closer together."
